The restrictions referred to is the distance one revolution of the crank arm will propel the bicycle, this is known as the 'roll out'.
The gear restrictions apply to each of the following member categories:
- Junior Under 19 = 7.93 metres
- Junior Under 17 = 6.50 metres
- Junior Under 15 = 6.00 metres
- Junior Under 13 = 5.50 metres
- Junior Under 11 = 5.50 metres

Restricted gearing for junior riders
(this article is as it appeared in Cycling NSW Rule of the week - 17 December 2008)
There has been some confusion and correspondence recently about gearing restrictions for junior riders. It needs to be understood that all NSW cycle racing is conducted as sanctioned events whether it be category 1-5 races or junior races that includes club races and as such the NSW Technical Regulations apply without exception. The Board is of the opinion that junior riders U17 and younger should adhere to gearing restrictions even in training. We note that U19 riders have the option to ride unrestricted gears in CNSW sanctioned open events.
Technical Regulations 57 states:
JUNIOR GEARING - ROLL OUT DISTANCES
a) Roll out distances shall not exceed the following:
- Junior U/19 Men & Women 7.930m
- Junior U/17 Men & Women 6.500m
- Junior U/15 Men & Women 6.000m
- Junior U/13 Boys & Girls 5.500m
- Junior U/11 & U/9 Boys & Girls 5.500m
b) To restrict roll out distances mentioned above, blocking off may be permitted by the adjustment of the derailleur or other means.
c) Junior Under 19 Male/Female competitors may ride unrestricted gears when competing in CNSW sanctioned open events
The following Guidelines for Imposing Penalties in Competition for bicycle non-conformance penalties apply for use of incorrect gearing. are:
2.1 Presentation at the start of a race or race stage with a bicycle not in conformity with the regulations. Penalty, Start refused.
2.2 Use of a bicycle in a race which is not in conformity with the regulations. Penalty, Relegation or Disqualification
